...One part of the series that strongly hints Gandalf may have used Narya is in The Fellowship of the Ring when the Nazgul had him cornered on Weathertop before Aragorn and the hobbits arrived there a few days later. In light of the fact that Gandalf's normal abilities don't include large amounts of power like the kind expected from an Elvish ring, it stands to reason that if he does exhibit a large amount of power, it is more likely that Narya is involved. Upon their arrival at Weathertop, Aragorn and the hobbits observe that 'in the centre a cairn of broken stones had been piled. They were blackened as if with fire. About them the turf was burned to the roots and all within the ring the grass was scorched and shrivelled, as if flames had swept the hill-top....' Aragorn himself, who is a ranger and a skilled tracker, further comments: '"For myself, I believe that he was here, and was in danger. There have been scorching flames here; and now the light that we saw three nights ago in the eastern sky comes back to my mind.'" The fact that the grass on Weathertop has been scorched and shriveled by fire in particular is odd because it begs the question: where did the fire come from?" (Leading Edge: Issue 84, page 70).
A first degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate and a sophomore at Biola University, Tidus Pinkham has been placed three times on the Dean’s List and is currently pursuing a BA in English. His career in writing began with the comic books he wrote and illustrated for his cousins, as well as the audio dramas he wrote and self-recorded for them. While he isn’t busy revising essays in the Biola Library or operating rides at an amusement park, Tidus can either be found reading fantasy novels or typing out story ideas at his desk with a warm mug of peppermint tea at his side. He lives in Southern California.
