Dr. Malandra’s creative writing students got into the redemptive spirit of poetry this semester by taking a sad situation and making something good of it—in this case, collaborating to make a Shakespearean sonnet for one of the weirdest years on record, 2020. Happy reading!
A New Kind of Long Distance
I reach for you through the computer screen
If only in my mind; a shared moment.
A memory long ago, I miss that scene
Of working towards my full enrollment
Of desks lined up and friends a glance away.
Inside jokes created between students,
Of chapels fully packed to sing and pray.
However, now those gatherings lack prudence.
I count the days of this cursed quarantine
And check my email inbox constantly
For a return to our beloved routine.
Till then, I cherish Zoom camaraderie.
The day of our reunion, close yet far.
We pin our hopes upon the vaccine star.
