From movie nights, poetry readings, launch parties, and symposiums—let's reminisce about the events that Biola English hosted this past academic year to create memories with our students!
Anders Carlson-Wee Poetry Reading
In November, Biola English had the honor of hosting Anders Carlson-Wee for a poetry reading and book signing. Students had the opportunity to hear him read excerpts from his upcoming work, Disease of Kings. We loved having the chance to foster sparks of inspiration and creativity for our students. Check out the titles in Anders' bio if you didn't get the chance to experience his poetry in person!
Anders Carlson-Wee is the author of Disease of Kings (W.W. Norton, 2023), The Low Passions (W.W. Norton, 2019), a New York Public Library Book Group Selection, and Dynamite (Bull City Press, 2015), winner of the Frost Place Chapbook Prize. He lives in Los Angeles.
Night at the Movies: Barbie Watch Party
Hey, Barbie! As a part of her Studies in Critical Theory course, Dr. Williamson hosted a screening of the hit movie Barbie for our students to interact with feminist theory in tandem with pop culture. Complete with our favorite pink refreshments—such as lychee candy, strawberry popcorn, and pink lemonade—English majors got to forge deeper bonds with another by engaging in robust discussions of the film with their professors and peers. We were so happy to make our students feel like they were ken-ough!
Presentations and Forums: Bi-Annual Writer's Symposium
During the fall and spring semesters, the English Writing Program hosted its biannual Writer's Symposium, an open forum featuring student work from our Writing in the Disciplines course. Selected by their professors and peers to represent their class section, presenters showcased their projects, which featured a diverse range of mediums such as short films, documentaries, research papers, and experiments. Audience members learned more about the wide range of subjects presented, from the intersection of storytelling and culture to trending political topics. We were so happy with the turnout and all the hard work that our students put in!
Poetry Night: Inkslinger Launch Party
To celebrate the release of the Inkslinger: Literary & Arts Journal for 2023-2024, the Inkslinger team at Biola hosted a gathering and poetry reading for contributors, supporters, and creatives. Audience members got to experience live readings of excerpts from the magazine, hear some words from the editor-in-chief, and learn how to apply for the magazine for the coming year. The evening was topped off with a delicious snack reception and quality conversations. It was an exciting night for our creatives—which included a number of English majors—to showcase their publications and highlight the journal to everyone on campus.

We were so happy to put on these events for our students. Here's to even more memories, opportunities, and excitement in the next academic year! See you then!
