What has your post-Biola work and life journey looked like?
My post-Biola journey has been unexpected in some ways and extremely rewarding in others. After graduating, I really wasn't sure what type of job I would get, and through a friend, I got a job at a marketing agency. I also taught English and literature for one year at a middle school but ended up back in marketing after that. I've since made a career marketing various products and services in industries ranging from software, manufacturing, media, advertising and financial services.
What’s your current occupation, and how did getting an English degree prepare you for the job?
I have two occupations right now! I have a full-time job as a VP of Marketing at a credit union in Los Angeles, and I launched my own womenswear line a year ago - Jean Franklin (www.jeanfranklin.com; Instagram: @jeanfranklinshop), without investors. So, as you can see I wear a ton of different hats. Getting a degree in English has helped me be adaptable, think creatively and always be open to new perspectives. Being creative and being able to write in a persuasive, yet simple and clear way has definitely helped me in all of my marketing positions. I don't have a degree in business. Although I almost got my MBA a couple of times, I really don't feel lacking in that area at all.
What was a favorite class or experience you had while a Biola English major?
My favorite classes by far were poetry and writing short stories. I also enjoyed all of the literature periods we covered and how they tied into the history of the world at the time and the outlooks writers were pursuing or wrestling with through their writing. It's important as a human being to be able to examine yourself and the world around you, as well as to have a voice and express that in whatever way you want to—whether it's through writing or some other outlet.
What about life after college was most surprising to you?
Life is always changing. I had plans and expectations for my life that changed and ended up being very different than I would have ever thought. I've also realized that with focus, hard work and determination you can be a part of making positive change in the world and pursuing your dreams. It's not easy, but you can make it happen if you really want to. Something else I learned is that very few people truly love the jobs they have and you need to have something in life you love doing even if it's outside of work. It's very easy to do a 9–5 job just good enough to not get fired, but I finally realized that's just not for me for the long term, so I'm creating something of my own.
What advice would you give to a current Biolan majoring in English?
I'd suggest that you intern and work with people as much as possible. Do creative projects and refine what you love writing or doing. Get as much feedback as possible. Network and get to know who the influencers and business owners are in whatever area you think you might want to work in. Some of the best opportunities appear through connections you make.
